Hidden in the depths of the tropical rainforest in the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains, near the tiny town of Xilitla lies the rare sculpture garden of Las Pozas. Designed by Edward James, the eccentric English poet and artist, and patron of the Surrealist movement.
His orchids and the vegetation of the Huasteca jungle inspired this architectural gem. I visited the castle for the first time a few years ago; the magical character of this place mesmerized me. So much that when I was visiting my family in Mexico a few months ago, I went back to photograph a story influenced by the strange beauty of Edward’s pad.
Walking into the gardens feels like being in a different dimension – another world. So big you get lost in the mystery of it all. I mean, for 20 years, the guy constructed 36 surrealist concrete sculptures: totem poles, hidden rooms, teetering towers even staircases leading to nowhere. Spreading out over more than 20 acres of lush tropical jungle.
Even when the journey through the mountains is quite intense, it’s a place worth visiting. A site you’ll be enchanted by.
