LGBTQ Pride is commemorated in June in honor of the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan, and every year, the presidency of the United States acknowledges it. However, this year, the (not to be named) president failed to recognize it. This comes as no surprise given the way he has been handling his role as leader of the “free world.”
But, if we learned anything from the uprising of our brother’s and sister in the 60’s is that we are a beautiful community that can defy suppression and ignorance while continue fighting for visibility – “we’re here, we’re queer.” So, today more than ever, apparel becomes more than just a fashion statement; it’s a political one.
And designers and retailers alike know it. That’s why, for a few seasons now, they have been releasing limited-edition collections to show support for the LGBTQ community. The best part is these collections are not just cool and bright; most of them are donating all or part of the proceeds to causes that need immediate assistance. – Now that’s what I call “cause-a-porter.”
So whether you’re traveling to New York City to join the first televised parade –like I am (make sure you keep an eye for me on the Kiehl’s float) or just have plans to celebrate at home, don’t shy away and embrace the colors of the rainbow.
