On Tuesday, January 15th, Metrosource, the second largest gay and lesbian publication in the U.S., took their longtime feature People We Love live for the first time ever with a gala at 48 Lounge in Midtown, Manhattan. Honorees in attendance included CNN’s Don Lemon, NYC columnist and gay author Michael Musto and drag queen contest winner Tina Burner.

The dress code for the invite-only VIP gala – dress to impress – encouraged guests to interpret it however they felt most comfortable and fabulous. Attendees didn’t disappoint. Starting with Don Lemon, who stepped onto the podium to receive his award, was in his most dapper attire.
Sidenote: The CNN Tonight host jokingly told me he wouldn’t take a picture with me because I was better dressed than him…um, this old thing? LOL! What can I say? I am a fashion blogger so I have to step it up. Thank you, Mr. Turk!
“It’s okay to be gay. As a matter of fact, it’s fabulous.”Lemon said. He went on to say at the end of his speech… “live, laugh, love, be happy, go hug someone and do something a little dirty tonight.” The crowd went wild.
When I asked Metrosource associate editor Kevin Phinney about his choice to honor Don Lemon he told me, “He’s the perfect example of a conscious, openly gay man who has done his best to uplift us and to represent us in a way that provides us with some dignity, better acceptance, and better inclusivity.”
Metrosource also introduced a lifetime achievement award, which will be named for this year’s first recipient. Henceforth, it will be known as the John Waters Legacy Award. Other honorees featured in People We Love 2018 included filmmaker/musician/actress Janelle Monáe, actress Samira Wiley of Orange is the New Black and The Handmaid’s Tale, veteran British actor Rupert Everett, comedians Cameron Esposito and Hannah Gadsby, and new media figures like YouTube satirist Randy Rainbow -among others.
I was so happy to spend a night celebrating the legacy of the LGBTQ community in one of the most gay-friendly cities in the world, New York City.
