St. Louis, A New Gay Pride Destination

As you homos should know, LGBT Pride is commemorated this month in honor of the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan. Most of us, including myself, are already making plans to go somewhere and celebrate. New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are some of the cities that immediately come to mind. However, what if I tell you that St. Louis is a destination you should consider for your upcoming Gay Pride weekend travels?

Reinas, como ustedes ya sabran, el Orgullo Gay se conmemora el mes de Junio en honor a los disturbios de 1969 de Stonewall en Manhattan. La mayoria de nosotros, ya estamos haciendo planes para ir algun sitio y celebrar. Nueva York, Los Angeles y San Francisco son algunas de las ciudades en las que inmediatamente pensamos. Sin embargo, sabias que St. Louis es un destino que deberias de considerar para la proxima Marcha del Orgullo LGBT? 

This river city in the marvelous Mississippi is not only home of one the Midwest’s largest PrideFests but was also named one of Advocate magazine’s top 10 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) friendly cities. If you’re still not sold on the idea, just bare with me, I promise there’s a lot for you to see and do in St. Louis.

Esta maravillosa ciudad situada a las orillas del rio Mississippi no solo es casa de uno de los mas grandes PrideFest en el Medio Oeste; pero tambien ha sido nombrada por la revista Advocate como una de las 10 ciudades mas amistosas para Lesbianas, Gays, Bisexuales y Transgenero. Si aun no estas convencido, esperame tantito, te prometo que hay muchas cosas que ver y hacer en St. Louis.

The City

This charming city is noted for its diverse neighborhoods and stunning architecture. Historic buildings, churches, and the famous worldly Gateway Arch. – Millions visit this stainless steel monument every year – Worth seeing is The Little Black Dress exhibit on display at the Missouri Museum of History, peruses the transition of black from a symbol of grief to a symbol of high fashion. And your visit won’t be complete without enjoying the scenic views of Forest Park.

La ciudad del Gateway se caracteriza por sus diversas colonias y su estupenda arquitectura. Edificios historicos, iglesias y el famoso arco Gateway – Millones visitan esta impresionante obra arquitectonica cada año – Vale la pena darse una vuelta por la exhibicion de “The Little Black Dress” en el Museo de Historia de Mississippi, explora la transicion del negro como un simbolo de duelo hacia un simbolo de alta costura. Tu visita no seria completa sin disfrutar el paisaje de Forest Park.

The Scene

Rainbow flags accent the streets of The Groove, the core of the St. Louis “gayborhood”. You can find shopping, drinking and dining hot spots along Manchester Avenue. If you’re not into “the scene” and prefer something low key and most cosmopolitan, stop by Central West End. While you’re there visit one of the exciting galleries, try on some fancy clothes or just grab a coffee.

Banderas de arcoiris se pueden observar en las calles de The Groove, el corazon del barrio gay de St. Louis. A lo largo de la Avenida Manchester, puedes encontrar los lugares mas populares para comprar, comer y tomar. Si lo tuyo no es el “ambiente” y prefieres algo mas tranquilo y cosmopolita, Central West End es el barrio indicado. Ahi puedes visitar alguna de las fabulosas galerias de arte, probarte prendas de diseñador o simplemente tomarte un cafecito.

The Festival

PrideFest offers entertainment for everyone. The calendar is full of activities that you can enjoy with your friends, family or loved one. There’s a movie night, a pride run, several headliners including Jordin Sparks and Havana Brown (once you hear “We run the night” you will remember all of those crazy nights you’ve had out and about) and of course the parade.

PrideFest ofrece algo para todos. El calendario esta lleno de actividades que puedes disfrutar con tus amigos, familias o tu media naranja. Hay una noche de peliculas, una carrera del orgullo, y varios artistas como Jordin Sparks y Havana Brown ( ya que escuches “We Run The Night” recordaras todas esas noches de parranda) y por supuesto la marcha.

Who knew St. Louis was such a Gay Pride destination? The more you know.

Quien hubiera pensado que St. Louis seria un destino para el Orgullo Gay.
