When I think of Dallas beside Whataburger, cowboys, big hair, and highways comes to my mind. Being flat out center in the CONSERVATIVE state of Texas, I never really imagined it having a considerable gay scene (up until I lived there a few years ago) Oh boy! I was surprised.
It only took me a trip to “The Strip” to realize how wrong I was: more than 10 bars and clubs conveniently located in one spot making it a gay paradise. Not the mention the Dallas Purple Party, a small regional circuit event that has grown into one of the largest of the country.
Dallas Purple Party holds a significant place in my heart being the first circuit party I ever attended to. In order to get in, obviously I had to volunteer because there’s only so much you can do on a minimum wage budget. Anyway, it showed me how passionate and dedicated these people are to the cause – raising money for local AIDS service organizations.
This past weekend marked the 15-year anniversary, and they celebrated with six Texas-sized parties and plenty of go-go boys. The fun started on Friday night with Ignite at S4. Plus for the first year, ROAR! – A bear event at the Dallas Eagle.
On Saturday, we got our speedos out to jump into RISE pool party where boys paraded and danced half-naked even thought it was overcast. One of the highlights of the events was a kinky kitty cat making rounds and the adorable and always hot Colby Melvin making a splash. Later that night (after I much needed nap) I made it to the MAIN EVENT where DJ Alyson Calagna brought the house down!
Sunday funday began with REVIVAL at Fair Park, and DJ Paulo closed down the three-day party celebrations with GLOW at Sue Ellen’s. Dallas Purple Party is not your typical circuit party: there’s a sense of community, production is incredible, guys are extremely friendly and after you go to one you really feel part of the family. – Till next time guys!
